CLOUDFLARE Description

Not to be confused with Amazon Cloudfront, CloudFlare is a San Francisco-based CDN provider founded in 2009.

The company offers a Free plan, which includes a CloudFlare issued SSL certificate. The features included in the Free plan are basic; more become available to Pro, Business and Enterprise customers.

CloudFlare, together with Akamai, Fastly, Highwinds, Level3 and EdgeCast, is part of the Google Cloud Platform CDN Interconnect program. As part of the collaboration, 30 CloudFlare points-of-presence (PoPs) are directly connected to the Google Cloud infrastructure. When a content request comes in from a Google Cloud origin it will route directly through the interconnect between both parties rather than through the public Internet. As a result, latency is reduced for origin requests. Clients using Google Cloud also receive a discount to their egress traffic.

CloudFlare serves, and has served notable brands such as Reddit, Ello, Cisco, Zendesk, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, OkCupid and eHarmony.

FASTLY Description

Founded in 2011, Fastly is a relatively new player in the CDN market. As of 2015, the company has raised $130 million from investors Battery Ventures, IDG Ventures, August Capital, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Amplify Partners and ICONIQ Capital.

Self-proclaimed ‘new generation CDN service’, Fastly offers a full-SSD network and PoPs in North America, Brazil, Europe, APAC and Australia & New Zealand. Their Fastly Cloud Accelerator partnership with Google allows Fastly clients to connect directly to the Google Cloud backbone, and configure a Fastly origin shield in front of their GCE storage bucket. The partnership might be considered a way for both parties to compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS), and their S3 storage solution and Cloudfront CDN service. Other CDN providers participating in the Google Cloud Platform CDN Interconnect program are EdgeCast, Highwinds, Level3, Akamai and CloudFlare.

Fastly uses web application accelerator Varnish, and allows clients to upload their custom VCL (Varnish Configuration Language) to the Fastly platform. Currently, there is one alternative to Fastly when it comes to uploading custom VCLs, and that is ‘developer CDN’ section.io.

On-boarding with Fastly is quick & easy and can be done without intervention a sales representative. Their extensive API-tools include purging, stats and config management. For an overview of Fastly’s features, check out the table below or make comparisons with other CDN providers.

Notable customers of Fastly include Twitter, Wired, Kickstarter, Rakuten, Etsy, Shazam, Yelp, GitHub, Firebase, Cloudera, Stripe, New Relic and Imgur.
