Founded in 2011, Fastly is a relatively new player in the CDN market. As of 2015, the company has raised $130 million from investors Battery Ventures, IDG Ventures, August Capital, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Amplify Partners and ICONIQ Capital.
Self-proclaimed ‘new generation CDN service’, Fastly offers a full-SSD network and PoPs in North America, Brazil, Europe, APAC and Australia & New Zealand. Their Fastly Cloud Accelerator partnership with Google allows Fastly clients to connect directly to the Google Cloud backbone, and configure a Fastly origin shield in front of their GCE storage bucket. The partnership might be considered a way for both parties to compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS), and their S3 storage solution and Cloudfront CDN service. Other CDN providers participating in the Google Cloud Platform CDN Interconnect program are EdgeCast, Highwinds, Level3, Akamai and CloudFlare.
Fastly uses web application accelerator Varnish, and allows clients to upload their custom VCL (Varnish Configuration Language) to the Fastly platform. Currently, there is one alternative to Fastly when it comes to uploading custom VCLs, and that is ‘developer CDN’ section.io.
On-boarding with Fastly is quick & easy and can be done without intervention a sales representative. Their extensive API-tools include purging, stats and config management. For an overview of Fastly’s features, check out the table below or make comparisons with other CDN providers.
Notable customers of Fastly include Twitter, Wired, Kickstarter, Rakuten, Etsy, Shazam, Yelp, GitHub, Firebase, Cloudera, Stripe, New Relic and Imgur.
Instart Logic is a CDN provider founded in 2010, and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California. The company is known for its $100 million contract buyout campaign targeted at Akamai customers.
Customers in the Instart Logic portfolio include, or have included: Quora, Washington Post, and Kongregate. At the time of writing, the listings on the website seem out-of-date, as GameStop, Staples, Shutterstock, Yum!, L’Oreal and Pizza Hut no (longer) look to be customers of Instart Logic. At least not for static file delivery.
Through a partnership with ChinaCache, Instart Logic offers coverage of mainland China with points of presence (PoPs) in roughly 140 cities.
Instart Logic supports SPDY.
