Streamroot is a peer-to-peer or p2p CDN, which means that for the distribution of content they redirect traffic from user to user. This also means that they do not have their own servers to distribute content from. As a result, a p2p CDN functions differently from a regular CDN. The best use case scenarios are larger livestreams, and/or very localized content. For a closer look at how p2p CDNs work please read this article.
Streamroot has multiple innovations incorporated in in its ‘Streamroot DNA’ (p2p) technology. These innovations help with improving the capabilities of the p2p network, these include dynamic multi sourcing with intelligent assembling of content, as well as micro-cashing for more a more efficient network. Additionally, Streamroot are one of the first companies to offer a fixed price infrastructure.
Streamroot DNA is also already integrated with multiple other services including but not limited to, Unified Streaming and elemental for packaging, Widevine and Playready for DRM, Fastly, Level3 and Akamai for CDNs, JWPlayer, Brightcove and Flowplayer for video players, and the infrastructure on Nice People at Work for the Analytics. The service is compatible with the most popular streaming formats like MPEG-DASH and HLS.
Founded in 2011, Fastly is a relatively new player in the CDN market. As of 2015, the company has raised $130 million from investors Battery Ventures, IDG Ventures, August Capital, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Amplify Partners and ICONIQ Capital.
Self-proclaimed ‘new generation CDN service’, Fastly offers a full-SSD network and PoPs in North America, Brazil, Europe, APAC and Australia & New Zealand. Their Fastly Cloud Accelerator partnership with Google allows Fastly clients to connect directly to the Google Cloud backbone, and configure a Fastly origin shield in front of their GCE storage bucket. The partnership might be considered a way for both parties to compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS), and their S3 storage solution and Cloudfront CDN service. Other CDN providers participating in the Google Cloud Platform CDN Interconnect program are EdgeCast, Highwinds, Level3, Akamai and CloudFlare.
Fastly uses web application accelerator Varnish, and allows clients to upload their custom VCL (Varnish Configuration Language) to the Fastly platform. Currently, there is one alternative to Fastly when it comes to uploading custom VCLs, and that is ‘developer CDN’ section.io.
On-boarding with Fastly is quick & easy and can be done without intervention a sales representative. Their extensive API-tools include purging, stats and config management. For an overview of Fastly’s features, check out the table below or make comparisons with other CDN providers.
